History of the Federation


Football in Macedonia dates back to the beginning of the 20th century. Actually the first match was played in Skopje, on 20 April 1919. Selection from the English Army completed from the best recruited players has played versus FC Napredak from Skopje. FC Napredak won 2-0.
At the venue, in order to commemorate this event, a monument was erected in the form of a football (ball) weighing some 250 kilogram's, because that was the very first match played at the territory of Macedonia and the venue where this match was played was the first football field in Macedonia.

The monument has been erected in 1979, as a 70 years Jubilee of the first match played in Macedonia.
In the period from 1909 to 2002, many football clubs were founded. First club that appears was SK Vardar from Skopje founded in 1912 in Skopje. During the Second World War, a selection of Macedonian clubs has played versus selection of German Army, as well as versus Bulgaria. Also, many players from Macedonia were involved in the Bulgarian National Team.
In the period from 1900 to 1991 Republic of Macedonia had no National Team, because was a part of SFR of Yugoslavia, but in the period until 1991, Youth teams of all Yugoslav Republics have played tournaments between each other.
Whole documentation for these tournaments is at the Football Association of Yugoslavia.
In 1945, after the Second World War, a football section was established as a part of the All-Sports Community in Skopje (President was Gustav Vlahov), from which it was, however, separated on 16 August 1948, and finally the Football Association of Macedonia was founded on 14 August 1949 in Skopje, which was part of the Football Association of Yugoslavia until 1991, when it gained its independence at the same time as the Republic of Macedonia.First president was Lubisav Ivanov - Dzingo.
The best known players from Macedonia who were in the Yugoslav National Team were Kiril Simonovski-Dzina, Blagoja Vidinic, Metodija Spasovski, Andon Doncevski, Darko Pancev, Ilija Najdoski etc.
The first championship in the new framework was organized in the 1992-93 season, in which 18 clubs have taken part. FC Vardar from Skopje was the first Champion, without lost match. There was also Cup competition (FC Vardar was Cup Winner).
In 1994, Macedonia became a member of FIFA, UEFA and the Balkan Football Federation. Balkan Federation takes organization of mini tournaments Balkan Championships for youth players "U-16" and "U-18".
In 1995, its clubs have participated for the first time in the UEFA club competitions. As a Champion, FC Vardar from Skopje has played in UEFA Cup versus FC BEKESCABA-Hungary.
At the Cup of Cup Winners, Macedonia was represented by FC Sileks from Kratovo, who eliminated, in the first round, Hungarian team VAC Samsung (1-1/1-0), and in the second round has played versus FC Borusia Menhegladbah from Germany. After 3-0 and 3-2, the Germans qualified for the third round.
The National Team started its official activities in 1994 in the qualification for EURO 96 in a group with Armenia, Belgium, Cyprus, Denmark and Spain, obtaining 1-1 draws against Denmark, Belgium (1-1), Cyprus (away 1-1), Armenia (away 2-2), as well as defeating Cyprus 3-0 at home. The very first official match was Macedonia vs. Denmark (07.09.1994, 1-1, played at the City Stadium in Skopje) and the first goal scorer for the Macedonian National Team was Mitko Stojkovski.
After that Macedonia played Qualifications for World Cup in Group with Malta, Liechtenstein, Romania, Island and R. Irland.
Big victory was achieved versus Ireland (3-2), and most narrative result was the record 1-11, defeating Liechtenstein away.
Ever since joining, Macedonia participated in all UEFA and FIFA competitions.
